I mostly express excitement for things through research and planning. With our trip to Ecuador fast approaching (next week!), I've often found myself looking things up here and there about the places we will be visiting (hence a recent post about a spa resort where we will stay).
As I've perused websites, I've discovered some facts which I found to be interesting. There was lots of information that I thought was cool but I limited the list below to my very most favorites. If you feel like geeking out yourself, read on:
- Quito is the highest legal capital in the world
- Quito was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in the 1970s for having the best preserved and least altered historic center in Latin America
- Ecuador is one of just two countries in South America (the other being Chile) that does not share a border with Brazil.
- The new constitution written in 2007 and approved in 2008 is the very first in the world to recognize legally enforceable Rights of Nature. You may remember having read this on a recent facebook status of mine.
- The species diversity makes Ecuador one of the 17 megadiverse countries in the world. This means that those 17 nations host to the majority of Earth's species and are extremely biodiverse.
- Because of its location on the equator, Ecuador has average temperatures that do not change much throughout the season. The average highs fluctuate by 3 degrees over the course of a year. The lows by 2!
- The population of Ecuador, now approaching 15 million, is equal to the U.S. population back in the late 1830s
